Hundreds of New Mexicans fought to defend the Philippines in World War II. Among them were 112 soldiers from Grant County, who fought in the Philippines and were captured in the Bataan Death March. Out of these 112 soldiers, only 55 came back. Grant County, per capita, has the richest history of Bataan Veterans anywhere in the United States.
In commemoration of the 80th Anniversary of this historical event, a Memorial is being planned. The organizations involved in the planning of this event are: The Grant County Commission, The Town of Silver City, The Villages of Bayard, Hurley, and Santa Clara. Also, involved in the planning are Veterans Groups, Civic Organizations, Relatives, and Friends.
Freeport-McMoRan New Mexico Operations is a proud sponsor of this event and are creating metal silhouettes that will be placed at the park.
The Rededication Ceremony will take place at 1:00 p.m. Saturday April 9, 2022 At Bataan Memorial Park
